ZENITH and USM Modular Furniture have returned to the partnership they began last year, this time with a single DEFY Chronograph featuring a fully mirror polished dial and a matching Haller sideboard, both created for the 2026 TimeForArt benefit auction. It is a small object, and it says a lot about where collectible design is heading.

A Dial That Refuses to Stay Still
Most watch dials ask to be looked at. The new DEFY Chronograph USM, TimeForArt Unique Piece, takes in whatever is around it. Its fully mirror polished surface picks up the light, architecture and movement of the room, so the watch never looks quite the same twice.
The piece is the second chapter in the partnership between ZENITH and USM Modular Furniture, which began in 2025. The first collaboration set out the language. This one takes it somewhere more personal and less predictable: the dial now reflects its wearer’s world back at them.

Four Colours, One Face
Against all that reflection, the three overlapping chronograph counters carry USM’s signature palette of Golden Yellow, Pure Orange, Green and Gentian Blue. It is the first time all four colours have appeared together on a single dial.
The choice is well judged. USM’s colours are known from the steel panels of its Haller system, a familiar sight in design studios, galleries and modernist homes. Shrunk down to chronograph registers and set against polished metal, they read less as decoration and more as a quote from one design discipline to another.

The Architecture Holds
Beyond the dial, the watch keeps the established codes of the DEFY Chronograph USM. The compact 37 mm stainless steel case has the angular profile that has long set the DEFY line apart, and it sits on a stainless steel ladder bracelet whose linear rhythm echoes the grid of modular furniture.
The most rewarding detail is the smallest. At the tip of the chronograph seconds hand sits a miniature USM Haller ball joint, the connector that holds the furniture system together. You only notice it when you look closely, which is why it works.
Inside is ZENITH’s El Primero 400, an automatic high frequency chronograph movement beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. The El Primero name carries real weight among collectors, and its presence here keeps the project grounded in serious watchmaking rather than novelty.
A Watch That Comes With Its Own Room
The collaboration also goes beyond the wrist. USM has built a one of a kind mirrored Haller sideboard for the watch, with integrated storage for up to 24 timepieces. The furniture and the watch now share the same reflective language, and together they make a single, coherent object for a collector.
This points to a wider shift in high end collecting. The most interesting unique pieces are no longer only about what sits on the wrist. Buyers increasingly want a complete story: the object, its setting and the thinking behind both. For design minded collectors in Johannesburg and Cape Town, many of whom live with modernist furniture and follow the international auction calendar, this kind of crossover will feel natural.

Bidding for the Arts
Both pieces were made for the third edition of TimeForArt and will be auctioned together at Phillips New York on 5 December 2026. All proceeds will go to the Swiss Institute and its contemporary art programmes.
That purpose shapes how the project should be read. This is not a limited edition built for scarcity or a launch built for headlines. It is a single creative statement whose value will be set in the saleroom and passed straight to the arts.
Seeing Yourself in the Detail
A mirror is an odd choice for a watch dial. It gives up legibility and permanence in exchange for constant change. That may be the point. ZENITH and USM have made an object that only really exists in relation to its surroundings, and in doing so they have shown how much meaning two disciplined Swiss design houses can still find in restraint, colour and one well placed ball joint.
