Babylonstoren has left the Cape Winelands for Centre Court, where a spring installation drawn from the farm’s Puff Adder walkway runs until 14 September. It is the estate’s first activation of this kind in a shopping centre, and the anchor of Hyde Park Corner’s Made for the Season campaign. For a Johannesburg audience that usually meets Babylonstoren on the farm itself, it is an unusually close encounter.

A farm that agreed to travel
Babylonstoren in Bloom has taken over Centre Court at Hyde Park Corner for 13 days this September, and the choice of setting is as telling as the installation itself. A farm whose reputation rests almost entirely on the experience of arriving there has agreed to travel, and it has chosen a shopping centre to travel to.

The installation opened to the public on 2 September and runs until 14 September, drawing on the gardens, design sensibility and seasonal rhythm that define the estate in the Cape Winelands. Visitors move through a version of the farm built for a retail floor, with plenty to look at, smell, taste and carry home.
What is on show
A selection of Babylonstoren bath and body products, home fragrance, linen, décor, honey, pantry favourites, wine and gift items is available to sample and buy for the duration of the activation. The collection draws directly on the farm and its gardens, with many of the products made using ingredients and materials grown or created there.

That provenance is the point. Babylonstoren has built its retail range as an extension of the land rather than a souvenir of it, and seeing the products presented within a garden setting rather than on a shelf makes the connection legible in a way a display table never quite manages.
A clivia first for South Africa
Running alongside the installation is a display of clivias that brings a burst of spring colour to Centre Court, among them the first double clivia in South Africa, called The Hyde Park Double, grown and bred by independent clivia grower André Swart.
The pairing is not incidental. Clivias are one of the most anticipated spring highlights in the Babylonstoren gardens and form part of the seasonal planting along the original Puff Adder walkway, which makes their presence here a genuine continuation of the farm’s calendar rather than a decorative choice.

“Babylonstoren has such a distinctive sense of place that people recognise immediately, whether through its gardens, its food or the beautiful products that come from the farm,” says Tevye Block, General Manager of Hyde Park Corner. “Bringing a taste of that experience to Johannesburg gives our customers something genuinely special to discover at Hyde Park Corner this spring.”

The walkway behind the idea
The Puff Adder is one of Babylonstoren’s best known garden features. The 70 metre walkway follows the banks of a stream beneath a domed lattice structure, and its planting shifts through the year. Clivias take their turn in spring, following the winter aloes and preceding the roses, berries and bonsai of summer.
The Hyde Park Corner interpretation captures elements of that experience at a smaller scale. What survives the translation is the sense of moving through a planted space with a beginning and an end, which is a more considered idea than most retail activations attempt.

More Made for the Season
The installation sits at the centre of a broader spring line up. South African lifestyle brand Freedom of Movement opened at Hyde Park Corner on 3 September with its collection of footwear, apparel, bags and accessories, while the centre’s fashion and lifestyle stores introduce new season ranges.
RedLine Paris South Africa arrived on 1 September, marking the contemporary fine jewellery brand’s first boutique in Africa. Known for refined, minimalist pieces designed to be worn, layered and collected, RedLine brings a distinctly Parisian approach to Johannesburg following its expansion across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the United States.
Elsewhere in the centre, Moss presents the Mii à Table collection with its garden inspired detail for the table, La Corset welcomes the latest Pain de Sucre swimwear for warmer days, and Avenue 2A, the exclusive South African stockist of Brunello Cucinelli fragrance, is showing the Italian house’s fragrance collection.
“Made for the Season is also about the pleasure of discovering what is new as we move into spring,” “Babylonstoren in Bloom brings that idea to life in Centre Court, while our stores are introducing new fashion, fragrance, swimwear and homeware for the season. We want people to come in, explore and enjoy everything happening throughout the centre.”
– Says Block
Why it matters now
South African luxury retail is increasingly judged on what it offers beyond the transaction, and Centre Court has become the room where Hyde Park Corner makes that case. Bringing a farm garden into a shopping centre, complete with a clivia that has not been seen in the country before, is a confident version of the argument: not entertainment layered over shopping, but a reason to be in the building that stands on its own.
For Babylonstoren, the calculation is equally clear. The estate has always sold the idea that its products come from somewhere specific, and a first activation of this kind tests whether that sense of place survives the journey from the Winelands to Johannesburg. On the evidence of Centre Court this September, it does.
Babylonstoren in Bloom at Made for the Season runs in Centre Court at Hyde Park Corner until 14 September 2026, during normal trading hours.
