From private First Class suites to thoughtfully designed interiors and next-generation technology, SWISS brings a new dimension of long-haul luxury to South African travellers.
There is something rather special about the anticipation of a long-haul journey. The promise of a new destination, the excitement of departure and, of course, the prospect of arriving feeling refreshed rather than negotiating with your body after eleven hours in the air. SWISS International Air Lines understands that the journey deserves just as much attention as the destination. Its latest arrival in Johannesburg makes that particularly clear.
Since 25 October 2026, SWISS has operated its daily Johannesburg–Zurich service with the Airbus A350-900, introducing South African travellers to SWISS Senses, the airline’s latest long-haul experience. The aircraft replaces the four-engined Airbus A340-300 and brings an entirely reimagined cabin to one of the airline’s important African routes.
And this is considerably more than a change of aircraft.

SWISS Senses
SWISS Senses introduces a new interpretation of Swiss hospitality, where considered design, personal space and technology come together to make long-distance travel feel more effortless. Johannesburg now joins Boston, Seoul and Shanghai among the first destinations to welcome the new cabin.
An experience in every class
The first impression comes from the cabin itself. A sophisticated combination of anthracite, beige and Bordeaux creates a warm, contemporary atmosphere, while premium materials and carefully considered details give the interiors a distinctly understated elegance.
Across SWISS First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy, the airline has reconsidered how passengers experience their time in the air.
For those who appreciate privacy in its most luxurious form, SWISS First introduces fully enclosed private suites for the first time in the airline’s history. Standing 1.8 metres high, the suites offer an intimate space to retreat, work, dine or simply enjoy the journey.
The Single Suite features a 200 cm bed and a 32-inch 4K OLED screen. Those travelling together can opt for the Suite Plus, which transforms the experience into a private space for two, complete with a double bed measuring 200 cm and an impressive 43-inch screen. Both suites feature personal wardrobes, wooden dining tables and seat heating and cooling.
Business Class receives an equally thoughtful upgrade. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all experience, SWISS introduces five different seating options to accommodate individual preferences. Every seat provides direct aisle access and a fully flat bed of at least two metres.
Among the highlights sits the new Business Suite, complete with closable doors and a 24-inch screen. Other options include the Privacy Seat by the window, Extra Long Bed Seat measuring 2.2 metres and Extra Space Seat. It is a welcome recognition that comfort means different things to different travellers.
Premium Economy offers its own appeal through a redesigned hardshell seat with a 99 cm pitch, a privacy divider, wireless charging and a 15.6-inch 4K OLED screen. Meanwhile, Economy passengers can enjoy up to 99 cm of seat pitch, adjustable headrests, USB-A and USB-C charging and a generous 13.3-inch 4K OLED entertainment screen.
Bluetooth connectivity throughout the aircraft also allows passengers to pair their personal headphones with the next-generation entertainment system.
The details make the difference

Luxury Travel
Luxury, however, does not always announce itself through a larger seat or an impressive screen. Sometimes, it lives in the details.
One of SWISS Senses’ more interesting additions is its human-centric lighting system, which adjusts the cabin environment to support passengers’ natural body clocks. On an overnight journey between Johannesburg and Zurich, this thoughtful approach could make a meaningful difference to how travellers rest and manage jet lag.
The airline has also extended the SWISS Senses service philosophy across all its long-haul flights to and from Zurich and Geneva, in all four travel classes, even on aircraft that have yet to receive the redesigned interiors.
Speaking about the aircraft’s arrival, Rene Koinzack, Senior Director Sales North, East & Southern Africa at Lufthansa Group, highlights the importance of the South African market.
“South Africa is a very important market for SWISS and the Lufthansa Group, and we are proud that Johannesburg is among the very first destinations to receive SWISS Senses,” says Koinzack.
He adds that the new experience reflects the airline’s commitment to comfort, privacy and genuine care, whether passengers choose Economy or the privacy of a First Class suite.
A smarter way to travel
Beyond the interiors, the Airbus A350-900 brings meaningful improvements to the flying experience and the environment.

Aircraft
The aircraft accommodates 242 passengers, comprising three in First Class, 45 in Business, 38 in Premium Economy and 156 in Economy. Its advanced twin-engine design also reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by approximately 25% compared with previous-generation aircraft. It produces a noise footprint around 50% smaller, while its lightweight airframe incorporates more than 50% advanced composite materials.
SWISS plans to operate a fleet of ten A350-900 aircraft by early 2030, with further long-haul aircraft gradually receiving the SWISS Senses treatment. The airline has already started retrofitting its first A330 in Hong Kong.
For South African travellers, connectivity remains another important part of the experience. Through interline agreements with South African Airways (SAA) and Airlink, passengers can combine domestic feeder flights from cities across the country with their international SWISS journey under a single booking. Baggage travels through to the final destination, while the partner airlines coordinate connections in Johannesburg.
From Zurich, SWISS and its Lufthansa Group partners also provide convenient onward connections to popular European destinations, including Geneva, Munich, Paris, London, Brussels and Frankfurt.
With 242 seats per flight, the A350 offers 3,388 seats weekly between Johannesburg and Zurich, representing approximately 12% more capacity than its predecessor. Return fares from Johannesburg to Zurich start at R12,500, with fares across all four classes remaining unchanged. Selected Business Class seats with enhanced comfort and privacy carry a supplementary charge.
The journey is part of the destination
There is a certain confidence in an airline that recognises luxury as more than simply getting passengers from one city to another. It is about the atmosphere, the personal touches and the small considerations that make a journey feel less like time spent in transit and more like time well spent.
With SWISS Senses, Johannesburg gains access to an experience that places comfort and individuality at the centre of long-haul travel. Whether that means closing the door to a private suite, stretching out in Business Class or enjoying a little more thoughtfulness in Economy, the new A350 makes a compelling case for enjoying the journey as much as the arrival.
After all, Europe is waiting. There is no reason the journey there shouldn’t be extraordinary.
Travellers can explore and book the SWISS Senses experience on the Johannesburg–Zurich route through SWISS Senses, the SWISS app or their preferred travel agent.
