Marriott International’s Generation Earth project makes strides towards environmental education with the Sip for a Cause campaign. For every cup of coffee sold in March across ten hotels in the Marriott Portfolio, R10 went towards Generation Earth and the Miss Earth South Africa Leadership and Empowerment Initiative. To date, over 6,300 cups of coffee served at various Protea Hotels by Marriott, Marriott Hotels, and Westin Hotels have contributed to the goal of planting 500 fruit trees and leading education initiatives in communities and schools.

Turning Commitment into Action
Marriott’s ‘Sip for a Cause’ campaign, linked to Earth Hour 2026, is part of a combined effort undertaken by the Hotel Group on an international scale. Marriott International set a goal to conduct 35,000 activities that protect, restore, or enhance nature in the communities in which they operate by the year 2030. The activities include marine conservation and reforestation activities across the globe, driven by community partnerships and environmental responsibility.
“While Earth Hour is a symbolic moment, real change comes from sustained action,” said Johann Nortje, chairperson of Marriott’s Southern Africa Business Council. “By linking an everyday habit like coffee to tree planting and environmental education, this campaign helps turn awareness into tangible benefits for communities.”
This broader effort reflects Marriott’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact through energy-efficient practices, sourcing renewable energy, and lowering carbon footprints across its global portfolio.
Rooted in Sustainability
The tree planting initiative, in partnership with Generation Earth and the Miss Earth South Africa Organisation, is aimed at addressing food insecurity and creating greener environments in underserved communities. The organisation will also deliver environmental education programmes focused on reducing waste, promoting recycling and empowering young people to take action on climate change. Ella Bella Leite, co‑founder of Generation Earth and Miss Earth South Africa, said combining practical environmental action with education was key to long‑term impact.
“Planting fruit trees isn’t just about greening spaces — it’s about food security, climate resilience and community upliftment,” she said. “When tree planting is paired with education, it becomes a powerful tool for change. This collaboration allows us to engage learners and communities in meaningful climate action while creating lasting benefits.”

Brewing for change
At the heart of the Sip for a Change campaign lies the endearing message that ordinary efforts can make an extraordinary impact. By combining community partnerships, education and practical interventions, the initiative reinforces the idea that sustainability is most effective when it is both accessible and action-oriented. Through each cup served, Marriott and its partners are cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility that can leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
