Decorex: The Soft Life and the Future of Considered Living

LinkedIn Email

Decorex arrives at a moment when the world is increasingly seeking stillness, responding with a theme centred on sensory comfort and the quiet elegance of ease.

Decorex Africa has long reflected the ways in which we live, as well as the direction in which we are moving. For 2026, the continent’s leading design platform introduces The Soft Life, a theme that signifies the next phase in its cultural evolution: a deliberate recalibration of design’s current focus, and a considered shift towards balance and more intentional living.

Design as a response to modern living

In a world defined by acceleration and excess, Soft Life signals a conscious departure from relentless productivity, favouring spaces that restore rather than demand. It is not an escape, but a thoughtful response grounded in the belief that design holds a quiet power to shape how we feel, how we connect, and how spaces are ultimately understood.

The theme was introduced in February at an intimate Women in Design gathering in Cape Town, where industry leaders convened at the Anatomy Design showroom, long standing collaborators of Decorex, to initiate an early dialogue with the continent’s designers, makers and retailers. The discussion explored the role of comfort, care and the female perspective in shaping environments, as well as the broader trajectory of design across Africa.

From future thinking to human centred design

In recent years, Decorex has examined the forces reshaping our environments, from sustainability and technological advancement to the systems and cultural shifts influencing how we live and work. Soft Life builds upon this foundation, turning attention towards the human experience within these spaces, where wellbeing and clarity emerge as defining markers of contemporary design.

“This is not a departure from our previous themes, but rather a natural progression,” notes Garreth van Niekerk, Co Executive Creative Director of Decorex. “We have spent years examining the future and the frameworks that inform it. Soft Life reflects what people are now seeking within that future, including homes and experiences that nourish, restore and support how we wish to live.”

The power of soft influence

A central principle of Soft Life is that of soft power, the notion that design can subtly influence perception, enhance reputation, and create enduring opportunities through cultural exchange, collaboration and sustained relationships.

In this spirit, Decorex Africa announces, for the first time, a new international partnership with Maison&Objet Paris, with South Africa named as the Spotlight Country for the Rising Talent programme at the fair’s September 2026 edition.

“Establishing this partnership has required an extraordinary collective effort and represents a significant milestone, not only for Decorex Africa, but for the local design industry as a whole,” says Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director of Decorex Africa. “Our focus has always been on creating meaningful pathways for African design. Opportunities such as this transform visibility into momentum, and momentum into sustainable growth. This marks the first of several international partnerships we will be announcing, each designed to expand tangible opportunities for local talent.”

An aesthetic of comfort and intention

At its core, Soft Life celebrates design that is both aesthetically refined and deeply considered. Across installations, products and experiences at Decorex 2026, comfort is positioned not as indulgence, but as intention, with each element thoughtfully curated to encourage a slower, more immersive engagement with space.

For 2026, this sensibility is expressed through a palette grounded in clay, deep plum, warm coral, sage and a spectrum of refined neutrals. These tones are contrasted with the vivid neons found in nature, often overlooked yet striking in their presence, including electric lime, neon magenta and ultraviolet. This evolving visual language reflects a broader movement towards design that speaks softly, yet with conviction.

“Comfort is no longer a luxury,” van Niekerk adds. “It is cultural. It is becoming the language through which we choose to live, and design plays a critical role in shaping that experience.”

An immersive experience of modern living

Decorex 2026 promises more than an exhibition; it offers a fully immersive experience shaped by an intention to slow down, observe more closely, and rediscover the quiet power of living well.

Welcome to The Soft Life.
