Is Vilnius Redefining the Luxury of a Quiet, Magical Christmas?

A new festive tradition is emerging in Vilnius, this year recognised as the European Christmas Capital, where the city will be transformed into a winter setting that evokes cherished childhood memories of Christmas. The event, titled Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas, will take place on December 13 and will present a broad programme of attractions and performances designed to revive the joy and wonder associated with experiencing Christmas as a five year old.

Along with offering guests the opportunity to enjoy the spirit of Christmas slightly earlier in the month, this single-day celebration provides a quieter and more unusual alternative to the major European cities that often experience overcrowding and over-tourism during the festive season.

According to a study conducted by the European Travel Commission this year, fifty five percent of travellers are seeking niche destinations that are less crowded, while eleven percent state that avoiding large groups of people is their main priority. This becomes increasingly difficult during the December holidays, particularly in popular locations such as London, Berlin and Amsterdam which receive an enormous number of seasonal visitors.

Vilnius offers a contrasting experience. The city welcomed a total of one point two million visitors throughout the whole of last year, a figure that stands in notable contrast to the more than twenty million visitors in cities such as London and Paris. During the festive period, local residents will continue to outnumber tourists, giving visitors the opportunity to experience genuine local traditions and a more authentic approach to Christmas.

How to Enjoy a Crowd-Free Festive Programme

The first Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas event will present a full schedule of activities that recreate the childlike enchantment of the holiday season. Among the highlights are:

  1. A dedicated Christmas currency
On December 13, Vilnius will introduce a unique form of Christmas currency represented through festive tokens that echo the small treasures admired in childhood. These tokens, issued directly by the Bank of Lithuania, can be collected from five designated Christmas Currency Banks. Guests may exchange them for hot chocolate, tea or sweet treats at selected cafes, restaurants and venues participating in the celebration.
  2. Free guided tours
Special Christmas-themed tours will be available for visitors who wish to explore the rich festive traditions of Vilnius. Participants will be guided through the historic Old Town and learn about local customs in some of the city’s most vibrant and significant locations. These complimentary tours will cover a range of themes, including legends of Vilnius, the nobility’s once-celebrated holiday, and other traditional practices associated with the season.
  3. International Christmas Square
Sirvydas Square will be adorned with 144 Christmas trees, each representing a different international community living in Vilnius.
  4. A complimentary Christmas card postal service
Visitors are invited to send Christmas cards free of charge from Vilnius to destinations across the globe. Special posting stations will be placed throughout the Old Town. Guests need only write a message, include the recipient’s address, and place the card into a festive letterbox. The city’s Christmas elves will take care of the remainder of the process.
  5. A mass Christmas choir
Singers of all abilities are welcome to participate in a large-scale Christmas choir situated at the Town Hall Square. This includes both the rehearsal process and a final performance held on and around the ice rink.
  6. A variety of activities throughout the city
The event will offer numerous family-friendly pursuits, from complimentary screenings of the classic film It is a Wonderful Life to carousel rides, ice skating and craft workshops staged across various locations in Vilnius.
  7. Gingerbread-themed rides and onboard choirs
Festive buses will circulate throughout the city to spread seasonal cheer to visitors and residents. A storybook gingerbread bus will operate free of charge through the city centre. Meanwhile, the 3G bus route running from the airport to the centre will host live choir performances, turning routine bus journeys into memorable Christmas concerts.

What Makes Christmas in Vilnius So Special This Year?

The magic of Christmas in Vilnius will continue until January 6. Visitors may enjoy atmospheric Christmas markets offering handmade items crafted by local artists and artisans, including traditional woollen gloves produced using handwoven techniques. The markets also provide an opportunity to taste a range of local delicacies such as chocolate mushrooms, dried mushrooms and šakočiai, which is a traditional Lithuanian cake known for its branch-like shape.

Additional festive attractions available throughout the season include a two-storey Christmas carousel created by local artisans, an ice rink in the Town Hall Square and a Christmas train that travels through the beautifully illuminated streets of the Old Town.

Together, these activities contribute to an experience that is more intimate and heartfelt than what is typically found in the larger European capitals, making Vilnius an appealing destination for visitors in search of an authentic holiday atmosphere.

How Getting to Vilnius Becomes Part of the Christmas Magic

Reaching Vilnius is simple, with direct flights from cities such as Frankfurt, Copenhagen and Helsinki. The city is also an ideal base for exploring the surrounding region at a leisurely pace.

Throughout the festive season, travellers can enjoy special Christmas trains with fairy-tale-inspired carriages, turning every journey into a magical experience. These trains connect Vilnius to Mockava, with onward services to Warsaw and Krakow, while local routes to Kaunas, Klaipeda and Trakai are beautifully decorated for the season. Even journeys to Riga and Tallinn feel festive, making travel an enchanting part of your Christmas adventure.
