Reflections: Gert-Johan Coetzee Closes South African Fashion Week by Looking Back

LinkedIn Email

Gert-Johan Coetzee closed South African Fashion Week AW27 with Reflections, a collection that began with a childhood memory of still water and the question of who we become. It brought sculptural couture, a palette taken from pond and landscape, and the debut of a dedicated bridal range. The result was a closing show as personal as it was commercially astute.

A Pond in Koster

Gert-Johan Coetzee built his Autumn/Winter 2027 collection around a single image: a child sitting beside a pond, watching the water. That memory of growing up in Koster became Reflections, the collection that closed South African Fashion Week AW27 at The Forum, Hyde Park Corner, on 25 October 2026.

Water gave the designer a useful metaphor. Its surface mirrors whatever stands before it, while what lies beneath stays hidden. Identity works the same way, and Reflections set out to explore the gap between the self we show and the one shaped by where we began.

The collection could easily have ended at nostalgia. Instead, it looked forward as much as back, weighing the ambitions and challenges that shape a person over time, and the distance between a rural childhood and the realities of building a fashion business.

Strength and Softness in the Same Garment

The idea of duality ran through the construction. Defined tailoring stood against softer, organic forms, and structure gave way to flow. Sculptural silhouettes gave the pieces a commanding presence on the runway, while lighter fabrics added movement.

Coetzee has always treated fashion as a form of artistic expression, and the embellishment made that clear. Spherical details brought volume and a playful, tactile quality. Textured petal applications, dramatic floor length fringe, statement pom pom jackets and hand embroidery each changed the fabric in a different way, turning craftsmanship into part of each garment’s character rather than a finishing touch.

What stood out was the range. No single silhouette or technique carried the message. Some looks made their case through structure, others through movement or surface, and together they read as different answers to the same question.

A Palette Drawn From Water and Land

Cobalt blues and teals pointed back to the pond at the centre of the story, grounded by earthy greens and warm rust. Graphic houndstooth cut across the palette as a sharper counterpoint, stopping the collection from becoming too literal in its references to nature.

Texture did as much work as colour. An embellishment can be purely decorative, but its scale, placement and relationship to the rest of the garment decide what it adds. In Reflections, the play between form and surface kept the eye moving from the full silhouette to the smallest detail, so the clothes held interest well beyond their first impression.

The Move Into Bridal

The most significant news for the fashion house came with the debut of a dedicated couture inspired bridal range. It is a natural extension of the house. Bridalwear rewards the dramatic silhouettes and intricate embellishment Coetzee’s work already relies on, and it is the one category where clients expect a garment to carry real personal weight.

It also fits the story the collection was telling. A wedding dress marks a turning point, the start of a new chapter, and so it sits easily within a show about how significant moments shape who we become. For a South African couture house, bridal opens a client relationship built around one of life’s most considered purchases, and gives Coetzee a new space in which to apply his approach to detail.

Back to the Water’s Edge

Reflections asked how far a person travels from where they begin, and answered by carrying a pond in Koster to the closing slot of South African Fashion Week. Growth, the collection suggested, means recognising what shaped you without staying defined by it. With bridal now part of the house, Coetzee ended the season looking back at the water and forward to the business he has built from it.
