Represent Finds Its First African Home at the V&A Waterfront

LinkedIn Email

The British luxury streetwear label Represent, has opened its first flagship on the continent in Cape Town, with Sandton City and a dedicated South African website to follow. Backed by experienced local retail partners and DJ Shimza, the move shows how seriously international brands now take the South African premium streetwear customer.

From Screen to Shop Floor

Represent never needed a shop in South Africa to build a following here. For years, local customers found the British label online, through social feeds and in the wardrobes of the people they follow. On 15 August 2026, that relationship moved into a physical space when the brand opened its first African flagship on the Upper Level of Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront.

The timing is telling. Premium streetwear in South Africa has grown from niche enthusiasm into a confident consumer category, and global labels have noticed. Represent’s arrival is less a test of the market than an acknowledgement of one that already exists.

A Brand Built on Community

Brothers George and Michael Heaton founded Represent in 2011, and the label has since grown from its British roots into an internationally recognised name. Its audience spans fashion, streetwear and performance, and its proposition has stayed consistent: premium craftsmanship, considered design and a close reading of contemporary culture.

That consistency matters in a category that often runs on hype cycles. Community has driven Represent’s growth as much as product, and the Cape Town store gives that community somewhere to gather.

“We are excited to bring Represent to the South African market and see the potential for the brand across Africa,” said George Heaton. “South Africa has developed a strong appreciation for premium streetwear, and we believe this is the right time to introduce the physical Represent experience to both the community that already knows and supports us and a new generation discovering the brand for the first time. Together with our local partners, we look forward to building something truly special.”

London based Scratch Creative designed the flagship in collaboration with Raph and Matt Fitters, translating Represent’s international retail identity into its first permanent African space. The result is clean and restrained, and it lets the product carry the room.

Alongside the latest collections, the store gives a dedicated area to 247, the brand’s line of performance pieces and elevated everyday essentials. Giving the line its own space reflects how many customers dress now, with performance wear sitting comfortably beside everything else.

The choice of location is just as deliberate. The V&A Waterfront is one of the country’s most established fashion, lifestyle and luxury retail destinations, and it puts Represent in front of local shoppers and international visitors at the same time.

Local Partners, Continental Ambition

Entrepreneur Victor Barbosa and his business partner Byron Ryan are leading Represent’s expansion into Africa, and they bring a working knowledge of the local retail landscape. DJ Shimza (Ashley Raphala), a longtime admirer of the brand, has joined the venture as a partner.

The structure is worth noting. International brands entering South Africa often stumble on local nuance, from choosing sites to reading consumer expectations. Pairing operators who know the market with a cultural figure whose audience overlaps with Represent’s gives the brand credibility that advertising rarely buys.

Johannesburg Is Next

Cape Town is the first chapter, not the whole story. A second store opens at Sandton City in Johannesburg this October, taking the brand into one of the country’s leading retail destinations and to an audience with its own appetite for premium fashion.

Towards the end of 2026, Represent will also launch an official South African website, giving customers across the country direct access to its collections. The two stores and the local platform will work together, linking the in store experience to the digital community that brought the brand here in the first place.

Africa Enters the Story

Represent’s arrival says as much about South Africa as it does about the brand. International streetwear labels once treated this market as an afterthought. Now they are arriving with local partners, considered architecture and a long term plan. Customers who first found Represent on a screen can now walk into the store, and Africa is part of the brand’s story from here on.
