Sailing to Racha Yai
We hopped aboard one of Blue Voyage’s luxury catamarans at Wisit Panwa Pier. We had booked a full-day charter, and we headed straight to Racha Yai, an island roughly 12km south of Phuket. Known as one of Thailand’s best snorkelling and diving destinations, Racha Yai is home to several resorts and a popular destination for day-trippers.
Tip: Avoid high season if you can. Being able to enjoy the beaches and other attractions without the crowds that flock to Thailand during the high season was a luxury in itself.
The journey took about an hour and a half. This, in itself, was an exhilarating experience. There is something extraordinary about lounging on a trampoline on the bows of a catamaran as it races across the water. Sitting in mid-air with nothing but a net between you and the deep blue sea is a surreal experience – one I highly recommend.
Patok Bay revealed itself in spectacular fashion as we sailed around the headland. Before us was a calm bay with a handful of catamarans and speedboats bobbing peacefully in a vignette of blue: from midnight blue in the deeper approach to a vivid turquoise that turned to glass where soft waves broke over the sand. It was breathtaking.
The crew ferried our group from the anchored catamaran to the floating dock. We made our way onto the beach, where Blue Voyage had laid out a relaxation station under the shade of a beach umbrella, replete with refreshing snacks and bubbly.
Taking a swim in the azure waters was first on the agenda. We were delighted to find ourselves surrounded by colourful fish that seemed unperturbed by our presence. The water was pleasantly cool and calm, and it was only the tempting notion of a walk along the pristine beach that succeeded in getting us back on land.
We were ferried back to the catamaran for lunch. The Blue Voyage crew had prepared a seafood feast. As we tucked into perfectly barbecued squid, juicy prawns, tender fish and delectable crab, we spoke of what a perfect day it had been. Little did we know that the best was yet to come.
While we were enjoying lunch, the crew had been hard at work. The catamaran had moved to the deeper waters near the headland, and we were surprised when they set anchor again. It was time to play.
Some of us jumped into the water from the height of the deck, while others took a more cautious approach and lowered themselves into the water from the aft stairs.
We swam. And we snorkelled. We discovered that the fish in Thailand like to be fed bananas. I even tried the SUP (stand up paddle) board – and I can categorically declare that it is a lot more complicated than some people made it look!
Our journey back to the pier was a contented one. The late afternoon sun was low in the water; we were satiated, sun-kissed and deliciously relaxed. As we sipped our aquamarine iced tea, we agreed: the day had, indeed, been perfect.
