Gert-Johan Coetzee, South Africa’s designer to the stars, unveiled his Spring/Summer Collection for 2022 at a showcase at Vodacom World, the home of digital innovation, on Friday, September 30th. Gert headlined the exemplary celebration of craftsmanship and creativity alongside Lerato Kganyago and the soulful J’Something.
J’Something, of Mi Casa fame, opened the night with some of his greatest hits. Of course, these included the crowd-pleasing Jika and the beautiful Mamela.
Next up, Gert shared some of what inspired his new collection and also unveiled his new logo. The two elephants represent strength and warmth. As powerful and intimidating as they can be, they can also lock their trunks in an embrace of love and unity.
In his new collection offering, Coetzee used the rich symbolism behind the sunflower against the African sunset to emphasise the importance of always following the sun in pursuit of great horizons.
Also dubbed ‘the happy flower’, it reminds us to seek positivity and strength in all our endeavours and personal pursuits.
Gert’s translation of the sunflower in this collection relays memories of his early childhood of vast lands filled with bright yellows and greens against a canvas with brush strokes in reds and blues, especially seen as the sun sets over the South African sky. The sunflower encapsulates everything Gert-Johan Coetzee stands for; happiness, unity, and constant inspiration to face the sun and to see the positive in everything around us.
Nothing could have prepared us for the 42 stunning looks that made their way down the runway to the beats Lerato Kganyago teased from the decks.
In addition to being, by Gert’s own admission, his “best collection yet”, the range showed great depth and inclusivity, with looks for all shapes and sizes.
The collection was, indeed, a triumph!
