The selection of museum-caliber works further include a strong focus on contemporary art. Alongside Kentridge, whose colonial landscape drawing, Deep Pool, is likely to sell for between R3 – R5 million, this sale includes works by Conrad Botes, Wim Botha, Dan Halter and Clive van den Berg.

One of the premier works to go on auction on 4 June from Preller is his ‘Poseidon’. The undated painting, executed in Preller’s signature intaglio style and acquired directly from the artist, carries a competitive pre-sale estimate of R3 – R5 million rand.

“With his plaited hair, tousled beard and sleek almond eye executed in Preller’s thrilling electric blue, ‘Poseidon’ comes from the artist’s most important, late-career series of symbolically charged, disembodied heads,”

Dr Alastair Meredith HOD Art Strauss & Co Johannesburg.

Before the hundreds of enigmatic artworks disappear into the homes and vaults of private collectors, the public will stand a chance to view each one through a series of talks and walkabouts ahead of the auction. Taking place at The Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg, the auction preview, at the Wanderers Club, will be held daily from 1-3 June daily from 10:00-17:00.
