As the sun sets over the picturesque town of Prince Albert, the anticipation for the Journey to Jazz Festival (J2J) 2025 reaches a crescendo. This year’s festival promises to be a landmark event, showcasing an impressive lineup of artists while celebrating 30 years of democracy in South Africa. Scheduled from 1st to 4th May 2025, J2J invites both jazz aficionados and newcomers alike to immerse themselves in a vibrant tapestry of sound, culture, and community spirit.

A Stellar Line-Up

The festival has just unveiled its star-studded roster, featuring the highly anticipated premiere of Kesivan Naidoo and the Lights’ new work, which pays homage to three decades of democratic progress in South Africa. This performance marks a significant moment in the nation’s artistic journey, offering an evocative reflection on its rich musical heritage. Naidoo, a legendary figure in the jazz scene, will perform alongside an international ensemble that includes talents from South Africa, France, Brazil, as well as Spain, ensuring a dynamic and diverse auditory experience.

Adding to the excitement, the iconic jazz collective Tribe will reunite for the first time in 25 years, promising a memorable set that explores the evolution of their distinctive sound. Festival-goers can also look forward to performances from the acclaimed Kyle Shepherd Trio, known for their innovative blend of Cape jazz and global influences. Additionally, they will enjoy a host of other remarkable artists, including the Nomadic Orchestra and the Heinrich Frans Duo.

The People’s Concert: A Community Celebration

Kicking off the festivities on 1st May is The People’s Concert, a free variety show set in the stunning Kritikom Koppie Theatre, a beautifully restored former quarry. This event highlights local talent and embodies the festival’s commitment to community engagement. Attendees can expect to be enchanted by performances from the Lainsburg Brass Band, the Zolani Youth Choir, and the vibrant Prince Albert Vastrappers Riel Dancers, among others.

An Unforgettable Experience in the Karoo

The Journey to Jazz Festival is not merely about the music; it’s also a celebration of the spirit of the Karoo, where hospitality and warmth are as integral as the performances themselves. With intimate venues scattered throughout the town, attendees can savour the unique charm of Prince Albert while enjoying soul-nourishing jazz.
