In Remembrance: Douw Steyn

Douw Steyn, the visionary entrepreneur and founder of Steyn City, has left an indelible mark on the South African landscape. His passing on February 4, 2025, at the age of 72, is a profound loss not only for his family but for the many lives he touched through his work and philanthropy.

A Legacy of Excellence

Douw Steyn was not just a businessman; he was a pioneer who built a global enterprise that spanned seven countries. His journey began with the establishment of Auto & General Insurance, which revolutionised the insurance industry in South Africa. He later founded BGL Group in the UK, which became the parent company of Comparethemarket.com. This further solidified his status as a leader in the financial services sector. Back home in South Africa, Telesure Investment Holdings, owns Steyn’s insurance brands including Budget, 1st for Women, Dialdirect and hippo.co.za.

Perhaps his proudest achievement was the establishment of Steyn City, a luxury lifestyle estate on the northern outskirts of greater Johannesburg. One only needs to stroll through the City Centre at Steyn City to begin to comprehend just how much of a visionary Douw was.

Commitment to Community

Beyond his business acumen, Douw felt a deep commitment to uplifting communities. His pride in Steyn City was evident. He ensured that its benefits extended beyond its gates, impacting the surrounding areas positively. His philanthropic efforts included significant contributions to the Diepsloot Food Security Programme, reflecting his belief in supporting those in need. 

A Family Man

Douw is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn, and his children, TJ, Louis, and Tanya, and their families. His family has expressed their desire for privacy during this difficult time, but they carry forward his legacy of excellence and commitment to community. Douw’s sons, who are actively involved in the family business, are dedicated to continuing his vision for Steyn City and beyond.
